Sewing Tips: Pinking Shears for Doll Making / Швейные советы: Фестонные ножницы

Why use pinking shears when sewing rag dolls, stuffed animals and doll clothes? When you read about these shears, it is usually said that they are used to prevent fabric from fraying. And they prevent, indeed! But for me, as a doll maker, the reason for using them is different.

Pinking shears help me to make curved edges neat and accurate after I turn the piece right side out. And since both dolls and their clothes are full of convexities and concavities, I can't do without pinking shears at all!

Зачем нужны фестонные ножницы, или как их чаще называют — ножницы «зиг-заг»? Когда вы где-то читаете об этих ножницах, то обычно говорится, что они используются для предотвращения осыпания ткани. И они действительно помогают в этом деле! Но при шитье игрушек и прочих мелочей причина их использования для меня совсем иная.

Фестонные ножницы помогают мне добиться аккуратного контура любой степени изогнутости. А поскольку игрушки полны выпуклостей и вогнутостей, то это чуть ли не главный инструмент в моей работе.

If you want a round rather than a knobby doll head, or a nice flat rather than a broken doll clothes edge, then you need to trim your seam allowances.

Если вы хотите получить аккуратный контур без ненужных ухабов вдоль шва, необходимо подготовить припуски на швы перед выворачиванием.

The classic technique is as follows. When sewing any piece, you need to clip the seam allowance perpendicularly to the seam for inward curves with regular scissors:

Классическая техника предполагает следующее решение. На вогнутых участках шва припуски необходимо надсечь перпендикулярно шву:

And notch the seam allowance perpendicularly to the seam (i.e. cut away little triangles) for outer curves:

А на выпуклых участках необходимо вырезать треугольники:

The steeper curve you have, the more frequently you need to clip or notch. When done correctly the technique gives you the neat edge after you turn your piece right side out.

Делать насечки и вырезать треугольники необходимо тем чаще, чем сильнее изгиб. Если сделать всё правильно, то после выворачивания деталей всё будет выглядеть аккуратно.

But it really takes a long time and can be very tedious... That's why instead of clipping and notching I trim the edges with pinking shears, both inward and outward curves. It's so fast! And, importantly, both the convex and concave seams trimmed with pinking shears look perfect! This makes pinking shears an absolutely indispensable tool for me when sewing dolls.

Но это занимает очень много времени и может быть очень утомительным... Вот почему вместо насечек и треугольников я просто обрезаю припуски фетонными ножницами, причём как вогнутые, так и выпуклые срезы. Это занимает секунды, что делает фестонные ножницы абсолютно незаменимым инструментом при шитье.

What pinking shears to choose? They come in different sizes, with teeth range in size from 3 to 7 mm. I use the universal pinking shears: length of mine is 22.5 cm (about 9''), distance between adjacent teeth is 5 mm (3/16''). Have fun sewing!

Какие ножницы выбрать? Они бывают разных размеров, с зубчиками от 3 до 7 мм. Я пользуюсь универсальными ножницами длиной 22,5 см и расстоянием между зубчиками 5 мм. Шейте с удовольствием!
